Put on your party hat, get out your dancing shoes! Durham, it’s time to kick off your Mardi Gras season in style with the area’s very best Zydeco/Cajun band, Mel Melton and Wicked Mojos, plus perennial favorites and Durham Mardi Gras host band, Durham’s beloved Bulltown Strutters.
Mel Melton & the Wicked Mojos
Mel Melton learned Cajun and Zydeco music from the greats while living in Lafayette, Louisiana. He has played with and forged lasting relationships with Sonny Landreth and Clifton, Cleveland and CJ Cheniers, not to mention from a long stint Bayou Rhythm. He is also a crack Cajun chef, having owned the wonderful Papa Mojo’s restaurant. Mel is backed by his killer band, the Wicked Mojos, with Max Drake on guitar, T.A. James on bass and Kelly Pace on drums.
The Bulltown Strutters
The party kicks off with the Bulltown Strutters. The Strutters take the New Orleans second line and brass party band traditions, then throw in some classic Durham wackiness and eccentricity and while they’re doing all that they don’t forget to have a damn good time. They’ll make sure you do, too! With a massive horn section, bundles of energy and more sequins and feather boas than you can shake a stick at, how could it be anything other than fun?
All proceeds go to Durham Mardi Gras to help fund a Fat Tuesday that is fantastic, free and open to all.
The party starts at 8:00, $10 entry.
