Pre-Winter Dance Party: Cyril Lance / Good Rocking Sam

December 17, 2016  ·  Saturday * 8pm * $8

Dance the night away two rockin’ bands, all while celebrating the December birthday boys and girls!

Cyril Lance
The North Carolina born, six strings master, Plays Blues, Jazz, as well as Rock, and Lap steel, acoustic or slide guitar don’t have no secret for him. A touch of exception and a long time devotion for the Blues !

At age 11, Cyril Lance’s mom brought home a $17 guitar and a book of Bob Dylan lyrics that sent him off on a journey that he is still on today. His first two discoveries as an adolescent growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii were blues-great Muddy Waters and jazz-great Kenny Burrell. both of these icons have remained pivotal inspirations for Lance on his winding exploration of the American music experience for the last 25 years.

In the mid-80’s, Lance move to Boston where he immersed himself in the music scene and played his guitar in bands from bluegrass, folk, celtic, jazz, reggae, blues and art-rock for the next 10 years. While in Boston, Lance studied at the New England Conservatory where he further developed his concepts of improvisation and a deep respect for roots music.

Cyril’s shows are always an event with a host of musicians joining is at every turn.

Good Rocking Sam
2016 TBS Blues Challenge winners in the band category, GRS is a blues/r & b/roots outfit out of Durham, NC, home of the Piedmont Blues. GRS is big into the blues, but doesn’t really call itself a blues band, they just take it all in and try to put something original back out…blues, Memphis soul, Motown, New Orleans, some old funk mixed up and served out to the world-wide internet. Here they are trolling the web, seeing if the long tail has room for a humble, yet sincere Triangle roots band.

GRS is Dave Sword (drums and vocals), Dave Mozier (keyboard, harp, vocals), Chuck Taylor (bass and vocals), and Mike Conway (guitar). They’ve all slugged it out in the clubs in tons of local bands, and have been crossing paths for years. GRS grew out of jams/songwriting sessions at Dave’s place in lovely Efland, NC, and these sessions continue every week. Once they get about a dozen tunes together, we haul out the gear, and bounce between home studios to put it all down.
